About 600,000 Simplicity Cribs Recalled; Stop Using Them Now

Sept. 17, 2008 -- About 600,000 Simplicity cribs are being recalled because their drop side can come off its tracks, creating a dangerous gap where babies could get trapped and suffocate.

No injuries have been reported, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and SFCA Inc., which bought Simplicity's assets at a public auction in April. SFCA didn't make the recalled cribs, but it's cooperating with the Simplicity recall.

The new Simplicity crib recall includes the following model numbers: 8620, 8745, 8748, 8755, 8756, 8778, 8810, and 8994. The recalled drop-side cribs have a date code, which can be found on a label on the headboard under the mattress support, which ends in 05DH, 05GB, 06DH, 06GB, 07DH or 07GB (examples: 1806 DH or 0507 GB).

If you have one of the recalled Simplicity cribs, the CPSC recommends that you stop using those cribs immediately and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for your baby.

The recalled model names include Aspen and Crib N Changer Combo, Gabrielle, Camille, Providence, and Shenandoah. Only the brand name "Simplicity" can be seen on the label on the headboard. You can return the recalled cribs to the store where you bought them for a refund or store credit.

More information on the Simplicity crib recall, including a list of retailers and their web sites, is posted on the CPSC's web site. You can also call SFCA's customer service phone number at 800-858-8323 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or visit SFCA's web site.

In September 2007, a million Simplicity cribs were recalled after three babies died. The new Simplicity recall is due to sizing problems in the crib's hardware; the hardware isn't the same as in last year's recall, according to the CPSC.
